Carbon Credits

Thanks to Al Gore one of the latest trends in helping the environment is the purchasing of carbon credits.  In case you have never heard of them carbon credits work like this; you purchase credits from a company that will determine how much carbon you are responsible for putting into the air each year and they in turn plant trees with your money to offset that amount of carbon.  While this may sound like a good idea to you at first glance I would like to suggest that it is a twofold problem.

First Al Gore formed one of the first companies to offer carbon credits so he could use his platform to prey upon poor unsuspecting souls. Al Gore is the worst kind of hypocrite known.  It was made publicly aware that his home in Tennessee used more power than any other home in the state and he did absolutely nothing about that problem.  Look the guy is filthy rich I get it, but he doesn’t.  If you are going to tell everyone what a sad state the environment is in and try to force them to change their lifestyles then you have to at least do a better job of acting like you give a damn.  2 years after he had been repeatedly criticized for his own actions he finally agreed to put in a few solar collectors.

BFD Al good for you.  I don’t personally know the guy and he may really care, but there are so many things that he could personally do to make a difference that he doesn’t do, he should be ashamed.  So if you purchase carbon credits then most likely you will continue to fund Al and his entourage who will continue to be irresponsible in what they do.  There is no reason to continue to pay for his extravagant lifestyle with your hard earned money; you did enough of that while he slept through being your vice president.

The second and worst problem with carbon credits is that if you really have the money to purchase them you will feel like you have done your part and won’t curb your appetite for energy.  You will continue to waste resources and won’t feel like you need to do more.  Carbon credits are an easy way for people to feel better about themselves without actually having to make a difference at all.

Last years earth day concert that was promoted by Al gore was a complete farce.  Take a look at some of the studies that have been done about the consumption of energy that concert caused and you will see just how little Al and the celebrity talkers really care about making a difference at all.  Ask some of those celebrities to fly coach or even first class on a regular airliner instead of using their private jets and I am sure you will be told that they make a difference by spreading the word not by taking action.

I feel that carbon credits are for irresponsible people who want to feel good about continuing to be irresponsible.  Don’t fall into that trap, learn how you can really make a difference and step up and do it.
